E04 – Take the elevator

This is one of the selected episodes that will be part of the competition. For a detailed and up to date description please refer to the official rulebook.

General description. The robot must take the elevator crowded with customers to reach a service located in another floor. The robot should interact with the MK:DataHub to discover which floor it must reach to accomplish its task. The robot must be able to take the elevator together with regular customers of the shopping mall. The robot should be able to enter and exit the elevator at the right floor in the presence of people nearby and/or inside. To perform the episode the robot can interact with the customers in spoken language. The robot is not supposed to push buttons (although it could in a more complex version of the task), and it can ask the people around to do it.

Platforms allowed. Any robot that can navigate and interact with people in spoken language.

Setting. The episode takes place in the shopping mall, at one of the elevators. The customers are chosen from the visitors of the competition after a clearance check, where they accept to take the elevator with the robot, and to fill-in a questionnaire upon termination of the episode. The number of customers can be defined in order to provide an environment of increasing difficulty.

Procedure. The episode starts with the robot placed near the elevator. When the service is requested to the robot, the robot must find out which floor it has to reach. The robot should move in the area nearby the elevator where people are standing to take the elevator. The robot announces its intention of taking the elevator and then interacts with the customers to enter and exit at the right floor. The duration of the overall task is 5 minutes.

DH interaction. Type: data consumption. The MK:DataHub will provide the location of shops in terms of the floor where they are located. In addition, the MK:DataHub could provide information about the status of the elevator: which floor it is at, or whether the doors are open or closed.

Main functionality(ies). The main functionality tested is Navigation respecting proxemics.

Auxiliary functionalities. Other required functionalities are Spoken Dialogue (beyond command interpretation) and People Detection.
